Fretwell Award winners

Four Killeen Independent School District educators are being celebrated for their exceptional commitment to students after receiving the 2026 Elbert K. Fretwell Outstanding Educator Award, an honor recognizing those who positively shape young lives.

Recent surprise campus reveals were bestowed upon Union Grove counselor Margaret Morris, Eastern Hills Middle School history teacher Taylor Moore, Ellison High School counselor Sarah Noteboom, and Nolan Middle School English teacher William Port. Each was selected for their dedication, compassion, and meaningful impact on students and their school communities.

Established by the Boy Scouts of America in 2016, the Fretwell Award honors educators who exemplify professionalism, character and service. The awards were presented locally by the Three Rivers District.

“Killeen ISD is blessed to have many excellent educators. These four Fretwell Award winners personify not only the Scouting law, but also what it means to go above and beyond in their profession,” said Fretwell committee chairperson Laura Dunnells, a former longtime educator with KISD. “We are extremely proud to honor these individuals, who reflect the very best in the district.”

The honorees were nominated by peers, students, or parents, and letters of commendation highlighted the lasting impressions they leave both inside and outside the classroom.

Morris was praised for her genuine care and ability to connect with others. Her nominator described her as “extremely helpful” with a “great heart,” noting her consistent support for both students and staff in all circumstances.

Moore was recognized for fostering a welcoming and supportive classroom environment. Her nominator emphasized her dedication to creating a safe space where students feel valued and encouraged, always ready to lend a helping hand.

Port’s impact was evident through a student nomination, which shared that Port “inspires me to try my hardest and makes his classroom a place where I feel comfortable and supported.”

Noteboom was honored for her role in guiding students toward success in all areas of life. A parent nominator highlighted her commitment to helping students make wise decisions while supporting their academic achievement, personal growth, and future readiness.

“The Boy Scouts of America’s mission is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes, and we recognize these teachers and staff members are valuable partners in that mission,” the commendation letters stated.
